Somebody buying a first kayak will spend three weeks comparing hulls and ten minutes on everything else. That is backwards, because two of the things in that ten minutes have more effect on a first afternoon than the choice between two similar boats does.

The paddle: length first, everything else second

A paddle that is the wrong length makes every stroke worse, and no amount of carbon fiber fixes it. Length depends on two inputs in equal measure — your height and the width of your boat — and the second one is what shops routinely leave out.

That equal weighting is why a wide inflatable kayak needs a longer paddle than any published chart covers, and why a shop that only asks your height will hand you a paddle 10 cm short.

The life jacket: the only item where comfort is the safety feature

Federal law requires an approved wearable flotation device for every person aboard a recreational vessel, and paddlecraft count. That is the baseline and it is not optional. The rules, with the source.

The thing worth understanding is that a cheap approved vest and an expensive one float you identically. What you pay for is cut, ventilation and fit — and those are exactly what decide whether it is on your body or behind the seat. A PFD in the footwell floats nothing at all, so comfort is not a luxury here. The picks.

Getting it there: two problems, not one

Getting the boat from your house to the launch is a roof problem. Getting it from the parking lot to the water is a carrying problem. They need different solutions and most advice only covers the first.

• **No roof bars?** A foam block kit straps through the car's door openings and works on any car. The options.
• **Long walk from the car?** A cart, if the boat is over about 45 lb and the walk is over 50 yards. It is the least glamorous purchase here and one of the most consequential.
• **Inflatable?** Neither problem exists. That is most of the argument for one.

The rest of it

• **A pump**, if you own an inflatable. The one in the box works and is slow — whether that matters depends entirely on how often you launch.
• **A dry bag.** The cheapest genuinely useful thing on this list. 20 liters is the size that works.
• **The first-trip list**, which is deliberately short because a long list is a list nobody follows. Here it is.

What we would not buy

A section on gear should say what to skip as well as what to get, because the accessory market for paddlesports is largely aimed at people who already own everything they need.

• **Carbon paddles, in year one.** A real upgrade and a year-two one. Get the length right first.
• **Deck bags, phone mounts and rail systems.** A dry bag under a bungee does the same job for a fraction of the price.
• **Kayak-branded anything** where a generic equivalent exists. Straps are straps.
• **A second boat**, before you have used the first one ten times.
