Editorial Policy

Sourcing standards

Every factual claim on this site has to come from one of a short list of source types, and the type depends on the claim.

• Product specifications — the manufacturer, or the manufacturer's own published specification on the retailer listing. Every figure on this site was read on 2 September 2026 and the listing is cited on the page that uses it.
• Sizing ranges — a named manufacturer's published guidance, or our own formula with its inputs and derivation shown. Never an unattributed rule of thumb.
• Legal and regulatory claims — the U.S. Coast Guard or the named state agency, cited per claim, with an explicit instruction to check local rules.
• Prices — a live data layer only. Never body copy.

We never cite a competitor as an authority. Another review site's specification table is a copy of a source, not a source. If we cannot reach the manufacturer's figure, the page says the figure is not published rather than borrowing someone else's transcription of it.

Nothing is written from memory. If a claim cannot be sourced, it does not ship. Where a listing omits a specification our pages say “not published” explicitly, which appears on several product cards here and is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight.

What we never publish

• Fabricated reviews or testimonials. There are none on this site. This brand launched in 2026 and has no reviews of its own, and a clean page is the correct outcome rather than a gap to fill.
• Invented specifications. No estimated weights, and no “approximately” where a figure is simply unavailable.
• Implied testing. No “in our testing”, no “we found”, no staged photography implying we own the equipment. We have not paddled any of it and we say so.
• Invented credentials. Scooter M. is an enthusiast, not an instructor or a guide, and no page will suggest otherwise.
• Manufactured urgency. No countdowns, no stock-scarcity indicators, no “best price guaranteed”. The buy buttons say “check price” because that is what they do.
• Self-authored review ratings as structured data. On-page verdicts are editorial opinion and stay ordinary content. They never become Review or aggregateRating markup.

Update cadence

Every page carries a “last verified” date, and it means what it says. We do not move that date to look fresh — it changes when the content changes.

• Prices: refreshed automatically on a schedule. Anything older than 48 hours stops rendering as a number and becomes “check price”.
• Product specifications: re-verified against the current manufacturer listing at least twice a year, and immediately if a reader reports a discrepancy.
• Sizing logic and charts: reviewed quarterly against the manufacturer guidance they are fitted to. Changed only if that guidance changes.
• Legal and safety content: reviewed at least annually and whenever a rule change comes to our attention.

The sitemap's modification dates come from real content dates rather than the build timestamp, for the same reason: a site that claims every page changed every day is a site whose dates mean nothing.

Corrections

When something here is wrong, we fix the page and say so. We do not edit quietly.

1. The page is corrected and its “last verified” date updated.
2. A note is published in the Logbook stating what was wrong, what it is now, and the date — unless the change is purely typographical.
3. Where the error affected a recommendation rather than a detail, the correction says so explicitly.

Independence

Hull & Paddle earns affiliate commission and nothing else. No manufacturer or retailer has any input into what we recommend, how we rank it, or what we publish. No sponsored placements, no paid reviews, no free products accepted. The full funding disclosure.

Where a commercial incentive could plausibly influence a page, the page states it. The clearest example is kayak or paddle board, which opens by noting that we earn the same either way.

Scope, and where advice stops

This site covers flat water: lakes, slow rivers and sheltered estuaries, in recreational boats and all-around boards, in reasonable conditions.

It does not cover whitewater, sea kayaking or surf. Those carry a materially different risk profile and need instruction from a person rather than a website, and the page where that boundary comes up says so on the page rather than in a policy nobody reads.

Accessibility

Every color pairing on this site was checked against WCAG contrast requirements before it shipped. Tables are real tables with headers, the FAQ accordions are native elements that work without JavaScript, and every image carries descriptive alternative text. If something here is difficult to use with assistive technology, that is a bug and we would like to hear about it.
