About Hull & Paddle

What this site is for

One person, standing in front of a wall of kayaks or scrolling a page of paddle boards, with no idea which of the numbers matter.

That is the whole audience. Not people who already paddle, not people comparing their third boat, not racers. The person who has decided they would like to go out on the water and has discovered that every buying guide assumes they already know what a hull chine is.

So the site is built around three things that person actually needs: what the shapes do, what size fits them, and what it really costs once you count the parts nobody mentions.

Who writes it

Scooter M.. An enthusiast who is genuinely into this. No guiding certificate, no test fleet, no shop behind me -- someone who reads the manufacturer spec sheets and the owner manuals, works out what the numbers mean for a person who has never paddled, and shows the working. If a figure appears on this site you can click through to where it came from.

That is the honest description and it is worth being specific about what it excludes. No instructor certification. No guiding qualification. No years behind a shop counter. No test fleet, no lake we take things to, and no product supplied by a manufacturer.

The reason for saying so this plainly is that the competitive field in this category leads with credentials and testing claims, several of which are not verifiable. Rather than manufacture a version of that, we compete on the one thing that is genuinely available to us: publishing a method you can check line by line. That method is here, in full.

What we have and have not done

We have compiled the published specification for 39 products from the manufacturers' own listings, run displacement and capacity arithmetic on all of them, fitted a paddle-sizing formula to a manufacturer's published chart, and written 51 pages that each cite where their numbers came from.

We have not paddled any of it. That statement appears on every page of this site that recommends a product, not because a rule requires it, but because it is the single most useful thing a reader can know about where our confidence comes from.

What we will not publish

• A price we have not verified. Prices come from a live data layer and render inside the buy buttons. When there is nothing fresh, the button says “check price” and shows no number.
• A testimonial. There are none on this site and there will not be any until real ones exist. This brand launched in 2026.
• A specification we could not source. Where a listing does not publish a hull weight, our pages say “not published” rather than estimating one.
• Safety advice from memory. Every legal claim is sourced to the U.S. Coast Guard and dated, and the page carrying them says where our knowledge stops.
• A review score as structured data. The verdicts here are editorial opinion from someone who has not used the product. Marking that up as a review rating would contradict everything else on this page.

How it is funded

Affiliate commission, and nothing else. When you buy through a link here we earn a percentage at no extra cost to you. There are no sponsored placements, no paid reviews, and no free products accepted from manufacturers.

Commission rates across the categories we cover are comparable, which is the reason a page like kayak or paddle board can be written without a thumb on the scale — we earn the same whichever you choose, and the page says so. The full disclosure.

Corrections

If a figure on this site is wrong we want to know. Corrections get published in the Logbook with a date and a description of what changed, rather than edited in quietly. The policy, and the contact form.
